Paulson & Co.
$75 Million

Andrew Hoine is the man behind the curtain — or one of the men behind the curtain — at Paulson & Co. He keeps a low profile, while his boss, John Paulson (No. 2 on this year’s list of top earners), gets most of the attention — and the money — at the $29 billion New York–based firm. The 35-year-old Hoine is the director of research and co–portfolio manager (alongside Paulson). He is one of the key people Paulson has turned to in gauging the depth of the credit crisis, which his firm anticipated as early as four years ago and has capitalized on enormously for two years running.

Hoine has spent 11 years in the trenches at Paulson & Co., which catapulted to fame in 2007 by shorting the subprime mortgage market. Last year most of the firm’s funds registered returns ranging from 12 percent to 24 percent. Hoine earned a BA in economics from Vanderbilt University in 1996 and worked briefly at J.P. Morgan & Co. before joining Paulson. Like his boss, Hoine bought a new residence last year: He and his wife paid $15.6 million for a 13-room cooperative apartment on New York’s Upper East Side.
