T. Boone Pickens has always had a way with the ladies (he’s been married four times after all), and now the famous oil man and founder of hedge fund BP Capital Management is being rewarded by a group of established and extremely successful women. The charity 100 Women in Hedge Funds, a leading non-profit organization organized by professionals in the hedge fund industry, is awarding Pickens its 2010 “Effecting Change Award” at a gala to be held on November 17.
Past recipients of the award include hedge fund luminaries Julian Robertson, Carl Icahn, and George Soros.
“We are delighted to honor T. Boone Pickens with the Effecting Change Award this year,” said Lauren Malafronte, director of the board of 100 Women in Hedge Funds and a managing director at Barclays Capital. “Not only is Mr. Pickens an icon in the financial community but he is an inspiration through his generous giving in many areas that are near to our organization.”
Pickens, who is known for his generous philanthropy, had given away $1 billion, including $3 million to Big Brothers Big Sisters to establish the T. Boone Pickens Military Mentoring Program. In 2008, he launched “The Pickens Plan,” with the aim to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Pickens recently joined forty of the richest men and women in the U.S. in pledging to donate half his wealth to charities (see Hedge fund elite join Buffett-Gates philanthropy project).
Since its founding in 2001, 100 Women in Hedge Funds has raised $17 million for philanthropic causes in areas of women’s health, education and mentoring.
